Eddystone
Winstanley, Rudyerd, Smeaton and Douglass. Successive towers separate structural failure from foundation failure. Trinity House carries the story from masonry construction to remote operation.

Five stations. Five sets of constraints. Foundations grip a reef. Masonry redirects a breaking sea. Optics turn a lamp into an identifiable signal. The tower is only part of the system.

Read from Eddystone to South Stack. The sequence follows design problems, not a construction chronology.

Read the Eddystone study ↗Robert Stevenson’s tidal reef. A temporary beacon supports construction. Interlocking stone and reflecting optics solve different problems within the Northern Lighthouse Board’s offshore network.
Read the Bell Rock study ↗Alan Stevenson’s granite tower west of Tiree. A broad solid base, a long taper and a major refracting optic reveal the cost of building and maintaining a distant station.
Read the Skerryvore study ↗Cast iron gives way to granite. William Douglass and the Commissioners of Irish Lights address exposure, optical reach and the difficult junction between masonry and Atlantic rock.
Read the Fastnet study ↗A station below the cliffs of Holy Island. Trinity House balances elevation, landfall visibility and access. Automation removes the resident watch, not the need for maintenance.

A powerful lamp does not make a light visible through the Earth. Geographical range depends on the heights of the light and the observer. Luminous range depends on intensity and atmospheric transmission. The lesser limit governs what reaches the eye.
The flash pattern answers a different question: which light is this? Colour, rhythm and period distinguish a station from other aids. A tower’s appearance helps in daylight. Its signal carries the identification after dark.
Trinity House covers England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar. The Northern Lighthouse Board covers Scotland and the Isle of Man. The Commissioners of Irish Lights cover the island of Ireland. These studies follow their engineering roles. For passage planning, use corrected charts, official light lists and notices to mariners.
